F. Warren McFarlan on Portfolio Management
29 April 2004
Thinking about IT assets as a portfolio to be managed and optimized helps an organization shape its IT strategy, determine which projects to pursue, and allocate resources most efficiently. Most critical in managing the IT portfolio is structuring it so that it maps to and supports the organization’s efforts to achieve its business objectives. A variety of tools are available to help organizations assess their portfolio and ensure their IT investments are aligned with their business strategy.
Recent CSC research shows that more CIOs than ever are using IT Portfolio Management (IT PfM) as a tool to help achieve more while spending less. While the results of IT PfM are not yet in line with the expectations of users, it has been an effective cost cutting tool by eliminating duplicate projects. Pursuing IT PfM does not require commercial software – spreadsheets and homegrown tools are adequate – but it does require getting the portfolio management processes right.
