Environmental Applications of Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
Available now and co-sponsored by the LEF is a special edition of Yale University's Journal of Industrial Ecology. The Journal is owned by Yale, published by Wiley Blackwell, and headquartered at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.
In our previous Business Sustainability research, we argued that even if all of the energy needed to run all of the world's computers could be reduced to zero, we would still only reduce total world energy consumption by 2 per cent. The real opportunity for IT is to help reduce energy usage and pollution across the remaining 98 per cent of the global economy. This special journal issue is aimed at identifying and assessing these wider environmental opportunities, with peer-reviewed papers on household energy auditing, the energy implications of various music delivery alternatives, 'smart' irrigation systems, industrial ecology, and more.
While the Journal has been prepared via a peer-reviewed academic process, we think it has important implications for senior IT and business sustainability leaders who need to better understand how IT will eventually be used across their wider market ecosystems.
