Note from the author

This has been a fascinating exploration that has revealed rapid changes in how people are choosing to live and work.  For some people, the changes are wide-ranging and deep.  They are not only influencing how and where they choose to work, they are perceptibly changing their sense of self in relation to others, ownership of the work and personal responsibility for the quality of outcomes.

This promises the possibility of a changed value proposition, with powerful network effects becoming increasingly relevant and valuable at the expense of more traditional knowledge and experience.

The challenge for employers will be how to respond to the opportunities presented by shifting to new thinking and empowerment whilst protecting themselves from the competitive and regulatory risks and threats that are all too evident.

But this is not the whole story.  Today, the silent majority of workers are not engaging in social media and are not putting pressure on the enterprise to allow them work access to online media and networks.  This majority is confused and in no mood to be hurried into new ways of working.  There is very little evidence in our research to suggest that employers know what to do about it.

Some of the questions we will explore include:
